Existen fuentes en internet que muestran que el chmod utiliza representacion decimal, al convertir los permisos de decimal a binario.

Pero en realidad esto es correcto porque chmod utiliza una representacion octal... osea:

chmod 755 archivo

el 755 es representacion octal que al convertirse en binario es igual que tomal cada digito por separado en decimal y convertirlo en binario y unir estos numeros en un solo string de 9 digitos binarios..

para mas info ver este post, que explica en mas detalle este asunto y porque cometi este error...
